Runner’s World is encouraging people to keep a 2013 Holiday Running Streak. I think this is a great idea, but I’d like to modify it just a little. Their streak asks you to run at least a mile a day from Thanksgiving to New Year’s, instead I’d encourage everyone to at least walk a mile a day. If you can run great, if not walk; some days you might even go further than a mile. And even though I didn’t find out about this until after Thanksgiving, I’m still going to start now, which is a month of daily miles and that’s not bad!
I like this goal because it’s pretty easy to keep up with and it encourages people to stay active through the holiday season. Once it gets cold, most people’s activity level goes down. Even if you have never been a consistent runner (or one at all) most people are overall more active in the warmer months, so this gives you an easy goal to keep you moving.
This goal will not necessarily makeup for the poor eating habits that we all have a tendency to fall into at this time of year. However, it has been noted that consistent exercise generally leads to smarter food choices. Hopefully, this streak will get you to think a little bit more about what you are eating. I definitely think twice about what I’m going to eat when I know I have a workout coming.
Finally, it is also a nice thing to with your family and friends. If you happen to live near your family you can go out and run together but if, like me, you live far away you can make a long distance pact, checking in with and encouraging each other via email, text or phone.
